Chayote kootu/chow chow kootu

Chow chow kootu is a very simple dish, which is commonly used in many houses. This goes well with Kara kulambu and also plain steamed rice. This is one of the fantastic side dish for lunch time. Most of the kootu receipes does not require much oil and also it digests easily. This receipe is made with Moong dal. So, it looks very yummy and tastes good. You can add 1 tsp of ghee with kootu, it smells good and tastes really well. Now let me tell you how to make chow chow kootu/chayote kootu in simple way.

Preparation time:10 minutes 
Cooking time:20 minutes 
Serves :2 to 3 

Ingredients:

  1. Chow chow/chayote - 1 
  2. Shallots/pearl onions - 5 to 6
  3. Moong dal- 100 gram
  4. Turmeric powder- 1 tsp 
  5. Salt- as required 
  6. Masala chili powder - 1/2 tsp
  7. Urad dal- 1 tsp 
  8. Cumin seeds - 1 tsp 
  9. Curry leaves - few
Method:

Step 1: Take a pan and slightly dry roast the Moong dal. Add 2 cups of water and turmeric powder in roasted Moong dal. Cook till the dal turns soft. 

Step 2: After the dal cooked well, add the chopped chow chow and shallots. Cook the chow chow well. 

Step 3: Now add salt and masala chili powder. Cook for 2 minutes. 

Step 4:Next take a separate pan, heat 2 tsp of oil, add Urad dal, Cumin seeds and curry leaves. Saute well and add the cooked chow chow mix. Now, chow chow kootu is ready to serve with plain steamed rice and ghee, or with Kara kulambu.

Slightly dry roast the Moong dal

Add turmeric powder and 2 cups of water. Cook well

Add chopped chow chow and shallots into it. 

Add 2 cups of water and cook the chow chow well. 

After the chow chow cooked well,add salt and masala chili powder and cook for 2 minutes. 


For seasoning, add 2 tsp of oil, Urad dal, Cumin seeds, curry leaves. And add the cooked chow chow kootu 

Chow chow kootu/chayote kootu is ready to serve. 

Tips: If you wish, you can eat this kootu by adding 1 tsp of ghee. It smells great and tastes good.
