Tamarind rice/pulisatham

Tamarind rice is a popular traditional South Indian dish. And also it is very easy to cook. Even a beginners also try this receipe. Let us learn more about the tamarind rice receipe below. Preparation time:5 minutes 
Cooking time:10 minutes 
Serves:2 to 3 

Ingredients:

  1. Tamarind- lemon size
  2. Gingerly oil- 3 tsp
  3. Mustard - 1tsp 
  4. Urad dal - 1 tsp 
  5. Channa dal- 1 tsp 
  6. Peanuts - 25 gram
  7. Red chilli- 3
  8. Curry leaves -  few
  9. Turmeric powder - 1 tsp 
  10. Roasted fenugreek powder- 3 tsp
  11. Salt- as required 
  12. Pinch of hing. 
Method:

Step 1: First dry roast the fenugreek and make a fine powder. Set aside. 

Step 2: Heat 3 tsp gingerly oil in a pan, add Mustard, Urad dal, channa dal, peanuts, red chilli, curry leaves and pinch of hing. 

Step 3: Now add the tamarind extract, turmeric powder and salt. 

Step 4: After the tamarind paste gets thicken, add the roasted fenugreek powder into it and switch off the stove. Mix the tamarind gravy with steamed plain rice and serve hot with varama or pappadams. 

Note: leave the plain steamed rice under the fan to become cool before making tamarind rice. You can store this paste in refrigerator for 7 -  9 days.

Take the roasted fenugreek in a blender. 

Make a fine powder of fenugreek like this. 

Take a pan, heat some gingerly oil, add Mustard, Urad dal, channa dal, peanuts, curry leaves and red chilli. And pinch of hing. 

Add the thick tamarind extract, turmeric powder,  and salt. 

After the tamarind paste gets thicken, add the roasted fenugreek powder. Switch off the stove. 

Now tamarind rice is ready to serve with pappadams.
